A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to open the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: joyful, diverse, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
