Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
