Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Selection in England's Test Series Squad

The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise spot.

The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the tourists will delay until the morning of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions suit four seamers or the addition of a spinner.

Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man squad, showing there are no doubts about their fast bowler's fitness.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter expected to be omitted if the spinner makes the final team.

Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers

Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged several previous Tests.

In those games, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.

Among these 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners combined have just a handful.

At a venue renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers is still the probable decision.

Alternative Choices Considered

There had been rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to provide some slow bowling while also strengthening the lower order.

However McCullum has chosen to stick with Bashir, having stated earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the series.

Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”

“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents come out and excel out here.”
