In a move inspired by TV series guards, the Danish foreign ministry has initiated a night watch team—far from to fend off fantasy threats, but to track Donald Trump while Denmark is asleep.

The night watch begins at 5pm in Denmark each day and ends with a report compiled at 7am, which is then circulated throughout the Danish government and concerned agencies detailing what was said and developments taking place.

The role is believed to have been introduced following the bilateral dispute between Denmark and the US over the Arctic island this spring, when the US president suggested taking control of the resource-rich territory.

Observers note that this initiative is one of several examples of how Denmark's foreign policy and its civil service have had to adjust to the new reality of the Trump's current term.

A source familiar with the foreign office stated, “It's accurate to say that the situation in the region and the time zone gap separating Copenhagen and the United States was quite an important factor introducing this arrangement during the earlier months.”

Instead of everybody having to promptly reach for their devices to stay informed on updates from the United States, the foreign office explained it had undertaken a collective effort to remain informed on Trump activities.

Jacob Kaarsbo, a former senior analyst at the Danish defence intelligence agency, commented that this development showed, “as we have always known,” that the notion of the United States as Denmark’s primary partner was dead. “Partnerships are built on shared principles and a mutual view of threats,” he said. “Trump shares neither of those with Denmark and it can be said he doesn't share it with most Europeans.”
